Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy: Support for Memory, Attention, and Thinking Difficulties
While counselling can provide important support for the consequences of cognitive difficulties, including adjustment to changes, stress, uncertainty, frustration, and changes in daily life, Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) is a specialized therapeutic approach that directly focusses on cognitive challenges through education, strategy development, and individualized approaches.
Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) complements counselling by focussing directly on cognitive functioning. It involves understanding an individual’s cognitive strengths and challenges and developing personalized strategies, education, skill-building approaches to support memory, attention, organization, problem-solving, and everyday functioning.
Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy may be helpful when thinking difficulties arise after concussion, acquired brain injury, neurological conditions, cancer treatment, or other changes affecting cognitive functioning. The goal is not only to understand these changes, but also to develop practical tools that help individuals manage daily activities and improve confidence in their abilities.

Dr. Heike Dumke provides care and guidance in a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment. Services support individuals in understanding their cognitive strengths and challenges, learning practical strategies, and applying knowledge about brain health and cognitive functioning in everyday life. Support is available whether you are experiencing cognitive changes following a diagnosis or injury, or are seeking guidance about changes in memory, attention, or thinking.

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) principles can be utilized for many different conditions that affect thinking. Research supports the use of cognitive rehabilitation approaches across several populations experiencing cognitive changes, including acquired brain injury, neurological conditions, and some milder forms of cognitive decline. Emerging research is also exploring applications of cognitive rehabilitation principles in supporting cognitive ageing.
Specifically, Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) principles can also be applied proactively to support cognitive health and cognitive ageing. These approaches focus on strengthening everyday cognitive functioning, building effective strategies, and supporting individuals in managing risk factors associated with cognitive decline. While CRT is commonly used following injury or illness, its principles may also be helpful for individuals who wish to maintain cognitive functioning and address concerns about changes in memory, attention, or thinking over time.
